Utility Maintenance
The Utility Maintenance Division is responsible for operating, maintaining, and repairing the City’s Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection systems. This includes maintaining and replacing the water distribution network throughout the City’s service area, often called water mains. The same crews are also tasked with maintaining and repairing the sewer collection system to ensure reliable service and public health protection.
The Division responds to water line repairs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. While proactive maintenance is performed regularly, unplanned service interruptions can occur. Common causes include extreme weather conditions, drought-related stress on infrastructure, ground movement, or accidental damage caused by third-party construction activities.
Restoring water service is the Division’s highest operational priority when service interruptions occur.
Responsibilities
The individual property owner is responsible for the water service line and plumbing from the meter or property line (whichever is closer to the road) to the home or building.
The City is not responsible for any water damage caused by leaks within a customer’s service line or internal plumbing.
Water Meters
- All water meters and remote registers are owned and maintained by the City of Alamogordo.
Water Service Lines
- City Responsibility: From the water main to the meter or property line (whichever is closer to the road).
Customer Responsibility
- For meters located within a building: From the connection at the meter valve or property line (whichever is closer to the road) into and throughout the building, excluding the meter itself.
- All maintenance and repair costs in this section of the line are the responsibility of the property owner.
If customer actions, including abuse or negligence, cause damage to a meter, curb stop, or other City-owned equipment, the customer is responsible for all costs related to maintenance, repair, or replacement.
