Aquatic Training Registration

Alamogordo Swim Club (ASC)

A developmental swim club program with an engaging team environment that promotes a healthy lifelong sport. Run by experienced coaches focused on improving participants' competitive skills, speed, and endurance through progression rather than intense competition.

Rookies (ages 7 to 11)

It combines endurance, stroke technique, and a fun group environment to ensure that all participants make big improvements. Swimmers develop knowledge and technique in the four competitive strokes while improving endurance. 

Prerequisites:  able to perform the following skills

    • Freestyle/Front Crawl - must be able to swim 25 yards (once across the pool) using a recognizable/basic freestyle stroke (also known as the front crawl).

Advanced (ages 12 to 18)

Focusing on training, endurance, and speed, this is a good fit for swim teams and multi-sport middle or high school athletes. Swimmers train to improve technique and efficiency in the competitive strokes and build strength and speed through intervals and kick work. 

Prerequisites:  able to perform the following skills

    • Freestyle/Front Crawl - swim 25 yards with good body position and breathing to the side (rotary breathing) 
    • Backstroke - swim 25 yards with good body position
    • Breaststroke - demonstrate basic breaststroke skill/knowledge
    • Butterfly - demonstrate basic butterfly skill/knowledge
    • Total mastery of strokes is NOT required to join - that is what we are training toward!!

American Red Cross - Lifeguard Training Courses

  • Lifeguarding Recertification Course

Lifeguard Training courses are blended learning, which combines online learning with in-person skills sessions where you will practice skills and demonstrate competency. The course teaches a preventative approach to lifeguarding, rescue, and lifesaving techniques endorsed by the American Red Cross. Upon completing all course requirements, you will gain certification in Lifeguarding, CPR/AED, and First Aid.

Listed below are the course prerequisites and completion requirements necessary to help you prepare for the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Course. To earn the Lifeguard certification, you must fulfill the following requirements. Please note that practice during this course requires strenuous activity. If you have a medical condition or disability that might prevent you from taking part in practice sessions, you should discuss it with your physician and your instructor.

Prerequisites 

  • You must be at least 15 years old to take the course. Age verification will be required
  • Before the course, you will need to complete a pre-course water skills test to ensure you have the swim skills and endurance needed to succeed. Below are the skills test components. There is no cost for this pre-course water skills test. If you want to schedule a pre-course swim test, please email arc@ci.alamogordo.nm.us (only available during the pool season). Once scheduled, come prepared with a swimsuit, a towel, and goggles (optional).   

Pre-course water skills test components:

    1. Swim/Tread/Swim Skill Test - must use front crawl and/or breaststroke when swimming required distance (swimming on the back or side is not allowed).
      • Swim 150 yards, tread water for 2 minutes using only legs, then swim a last 50 yards - continuous, no resting between skills (goggles may be used).
    2. Brick Retrieval Timed Skill Test - must be completed within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
      • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, dive 9 feet and retrieve a 10–pound brick off the pool's bottom, surface and return the brick to the starting point (by swimming on your back with brick held over chest) and then exit the water without using a ladder or steps (goggles may not be used for this test).

Upon completing the pre-course water skills test, you qualify for registration in an upcoming Lifeguarding or Lifeguarding Recertification Course. Upon registration in an existing course, you will receive full course details and schedule. 

 To Successfully Complete the Class

  • Complete and pass the online portion of the course (approximately 6-8 hours).
  • Be on time for and attend all in-person sessions (partial absences are not allowed). The total in-person course time is approximately 22 hours for the Lifeguarding Certification Course and approximately 10 hours for the Recertification Course. At the instructor’s discretion, additional time may be scheduled for practice and review or to make up canceled classes due to weather or unforeseen circumstances.
  • Participate and demonstrate competency in all in-water lifeguard skills and all First Aid, CPR, and AED activities.
  • Pass the final lifeguarding written exam (80% passing).

Upon Successful Completion

  • You will receive an American Red Cross Certificate for Lifeguarding / First Aid / CPR / AED for the professional rescuer, valid for 2 years.

Swim Instructor Training

American Red Cross - Swim Instructor Certification Courses

  • Water Safety Instructor (WSI-Swim Instructor) Certification Course 
  • Basic Swim Instructor (BSI-Swim Instructor) Certification Course

Swim Instructor courses are blended learning, which combines online learning with in-person skills sessions where you will practice skills and demonstrate competency. The purpose of this instructor course is to train instructor candidates to teach learn-to-swim courses (for all ages) and water safety programs/presentations that are included in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety Program. You will gain certification as a WSI or BSI Instructor after successfully completing all course requirements.

Listed below are the course prerequisites and completion requirements necessary to help you prepare for and succeed in the course. Please note that this course requires moderate physical activity. If you have a medical condition or disability that might prevent you from taking part in practice sessions, you should discuss it with your physician and your instructor.

Prerequisites

  • You must be at least 16 years old to take the course. Age verification will be required.
  • Before the course, you will need to pass a pre-course water skills test to ensure you have the necessary swim stroke skills to succeed. Below are the skills test components. There is no cost for this pre-course water skills test. If you want to schedule a pre-course swim test, please email arc@ci.alamogordo.nm.us (only available during the pool season). Once scheduled, come prepared with a swimsuit, a towel, and goggles (optional).  

Pre-course water skills test components:

Swim/perform the following strokes and skills competently with a technique consistent with the American Red Cross stroke performance charts. Components are required for both swim instructor courses unless otherwise indicated. 

      • Front Crawl (Freestyle) - 25 yards 
      • Back Crawl - 25 yards  (WSI course only)
      • Breaststroke - 25 yards 
      • Sidestroke - 25 yards 
      • Elementary Backstroke - 25 yards 
      • Butterfly - 15 yards  (WSI course only)
      • Maintain position on back for 1 minute in deep water - floating or sculling ( courses)
      • Tread water for 1 minute 

Upon completing the pre-course water skills and registration in the course, you qualify for registration in an upcoming WSI/BSI Course. Upon registration in an existing WSI/BSI course, you will receive full course details and schedule. 

To Successfully Complete the Class

  • Complete and pass the online portion of the course (approximately 6-8 hours).
  • Be on time for and attend all in-person sessions. The total in-person course time is approximately 25 hours. At the instructor’s discretion, additional time may be scheduled for practice and review or to make up canceled classes due to weather or unforeseen circumstances.
  • Participate and demonstrate competency in all activities and practice teaching assignments (number of assignments depends on the course taken).
  • Pass the final written exam (80% passing).

Upon Successful Completion

  • You will receive an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification valid for 2 years.
